GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. As a general rule, cabinets are to be installed in INTERIOR walls only. Installations in exterior or cold  walls having thermal insulation and plastic vapor barrier are possible ONLY in certain situations. Check with our customer service for assistance.
2. Plumbing pipes, heat ducts, central vacuum pipes and electrical boxes will interfere with the cabinet and must be moved or a new location found for the cabinet.
3. Electrical, telephone, cable TV, and security system wires running vertical against the side of the stud should not interfere as the cabinet is 13 1/2” wide while studs on 16” centers create a 14 1/2” space.
4. Wires running horizontally must be moved.   Consult a qualified electrician.
5. IF the wall is NOT weight bearing, studs can easily be relocated to position the cabinet where you want.  Consult with a qualified building inspector prior to cutting into or removing a stud.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Step 1. Find the studs.
Locate the wall studs where you would like to install the cabinet.
Step 2. Check if the wall cavity is empty.
Try to determine if the selected space contains any utilities and has the clearances necessary for the cabinet. Probing the wall cavity with a piece of coathanger wire bend at 90 degrees will often locate any pipes that may be present.
Step 3. Pencil the cutout size on wall.
Lightly mark the wall for the correct size of hole you will be cutting in the drywall. Start by centering the cutout between the 16” studs.  Adjust the position later if necessary.

Step 4. Cut a small hole first.
Using shallow saw strokes, carefully cut a hole near the center of the intended final rough opening to be able to see inside the wall cavity, checking for pipes and electrical wires. Adjust the position of the rough opening if necessary to avoid any interference.
CAUTION:  Electrical shock and/or fire may result if insulated sheathing on wires is cut or damaged.
Step 5. Cut to final size.
Cut out the drywall taking care not to damage any wires.
Step 6. Attach wood block to support weight of cabinet.
Nail or screw a wood block to the side of one of the studs. The top edge of the block should be flush or about 1/16” higher than the drywall at the bottom of the cutout. The cabinet bottom will rest on this block.
Step 7. Attach side spacers.
Although it’s ok to install the cabinet between studs 14 1/2” apart, we have found that the cabinet is held more securely if the space between the cabinet and 2x4 stud is kept to approx. 1/8” on each side.  In the four corners where the installation screws go into the studs, attach wood spacers to one or both sides of the studs to reduce the opening to about 13 3/4” (or 21 3/4” for 24” cabinets).
Step 8 Set cabinet in opening.
Lift the cabinet into the opening and check for level. The cabinet will be secured to the wall studs with four black screws supplied, two per side, one near the top and one near the bottom.  The cabinet will be levelled with the black screws.
CAUTION:  If there are any wires running vertically against the side of one or both studs, use appropriate wire staples to hold the wires where they will not be damaged by the installation screws.
Install the screws in the following order:
(We recommend predrilling 1/8” dia. holes in the studs prior to installing the screws)
1st:   top screw, same side as supporting block.
2nd: bottom screw, same side.  check for level and adjust these two screws as required.
3rd & 4th:  two screws on other side.  turn till snug.
Use the plastic cover caps to conceal the screws.  A gentle tap with a hammer may be necessary to seat the cap properly.
Step 9. Install the shelves.
Each adjustable shelf is supported by four plastic supports.  The shelf has a groove machined into each end.  The flat ‘T’ part of the shelf support fits in this groove. Any accessories such as Divider Sets and Magazine Rod Sets install in a similar manner and can be done at this time.
Step 10. Seal the crack with caulking. (optional)
Walls that aren’t level and flat will cause a small gap where the cabinet contacts the wall.  With light colored cabinets and walls, this gap is more noticeable and we often recommend filling 1/8” or narrower gaps with a paintable caulk such as:
DAP Alex Plus - Acrylic Latex Caulk Plus Silicone.
Most building supply stores carry this brand in white and clear, as well as other colors.
Congratulations, your SPACE WORKS cabinet is now ready for you to use and enjoy.
